Psalm 66

First Friday of September, 2026. Transitioned out of August, transitioning out of the so-called ‘Ghost Month’, and if the sun shows itself more often, I believe we’re also transitioning out of this ridiculous, constant rain we’ve been having these past weeks, here in this wonderful mountain city I happen to live in.

Transitions. Shifts. Movements – stuff moving in, stuff moving out. Stuff that remains, getting clarified, refined, sharpened – moving, in its own way.

In all the movement, we’re bound to shift to this direction or that way… but what’s wonderful is that through it all, it’s the flow of the Holy Spirit that does it for us, in the body of Christ – That is, no matter how the waves pull us back, or how the winds push us about, it’s still all part of the greater flow of the Holy Spirit. We… flow.

And as we flow, our entire being flows along… in praise, in worship, in awe of God’s infinite power, eternal wisdom, and everlasting love.

Indeed, the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, and His mercies never come to an end. Indeed, His mercies are new, fresh and new every morning. Great, great is the faithfulness of our God, whom we call our Father – great is His faithfulness!

Thank You, Lord, for the reading of Your Word.

Praise to God for His Awesome Works

To the Chief Musician. A Song. A Psalm.

Considering all I wrote prior, I find this wonderful portion of the Psalms to be quite timely.

In a world constantly changing, in a reality that pushes and pulls, full of movement both chaotic and coordinated, it’s a good reminder to take a step back, away from all the movement… if only to recognize God in and through all of it, understanding that all that He does, all He has done, and all He will do – ALL of Him is awesome.

1 Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth!

2 Sing out the honor of His name; Make His praise glorious.

3 Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power Your enemies shall submit themselves to You.

4 All the earth shall worship You And sing praises to You; They shall sing praises to Your name.”

If we find ourselves overwhelmed by this world, we would do well to look beyond Creation, to the Creator. Even if we don’t ‘feel’ Him, even when our senses and thoughts fail to recognize His glory seen in all that was made, we can still intentionally look beyond, by way of worship… because His honor, His glory, His greatness, His power – ALL of our God is a whole lot more true than what we perceive with our limited functions.

We worship, ESPECIALLY in the darkness, knowing that the Lord is glorious and great, good and gracious, no matter what we don’t see, no matter what we feel.

5 Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men.

6 He turned the sea into dry land; They went through the river on foot. There we will rejoice in Him.

7 He rules by His power forever; His eyes observe the nations; Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves.

And in our worship, let us not be surprised if, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we are reminded of His goodness and grace, His greatness and glory; Let us not be surprised if, in the middle of our song, we are gently, graciously reminded of the wonderful works of the Lord – in our own lives, in our families, or in any and all things that have our attention, more than Christ.

And as we are reminded, let us allow the small realizations to open our eyes further, to recall, and/or observe more and more into what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will do – In our rejoicing, let us rejoice even more; Let the goodness of the Lord freely flow, and let it flow out of our beings in praise.

8 Oh, bless our God, you peoples! And make the voice of His praise to be heard,

9 Who keeps our soul among the living, And does not allow our feet to be moved.

10 For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us as silver is refined.

11 You brought us into the net; You laid affliction on our backs.

12 You have caused men to ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water; But You brought us out to rich fulfillment.

13 I will go into Your house with burnt offerings; I will pay You my vows,

14 Which my lips have uttered And my mouth has spoken when I was in trouble.

15 I will offer You burnt sacrifices of fat animals, With the sweet aroma of rams; I will offer bulls with goats.

And there it is.

Paul tells the Romans that the goodness of the Lord leads us to repentance… that is, a change in our way of thinking, but I believe this is something that happens at the very least. I think we’re either overwhelmed by the weight of this world, or we overflow in sheer awe of Christ and His finished work… so much so, that we don’t just bring ourselves to worship, but we also encourage others to sing out loud as well.

We sing, and bring others around to sing; We testify, and remind those around us of their own testimonies.

16 Come and hear, all you who fear God, And I will declare what He has done for my soul.

There was one point that I had verse 16 as a subtitle to the blog. But yeah, the thing is, when we testify, we aren’t just speaking it for ourselves, not just to our families, not just to our congregations, but the motive, the intention really is to speak to the entire world: Come and hear, all you who fear God, And I will declare what He has done for my soul.

And what did He do?

17 I cried to Him with my mouth, And He was extolled with my tongue.

18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.

19 But certainly God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer.

20 Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer, Nor His mercy from me!

I’m writing all of this while our worship team is practicing in the background, and I just have to say that, well, I’m not exactly laser-focused right now. Just listening to them as they wrap up the last song of their second round of singing.

They’re singing a really nice classic – I Stand In Awe Of You.

And as I’m wrapping all of this up, I suppose that’s really all I want to go ahead and share, as I dragged you all through Psalm 66 – that no matter how chaotic the world is, God is always beautiful beyond description, and too marvelous for words.

No matter how we feel down, no matter how bad we think of ourselves, no matter how dark things may seem, our God continues to be too wonderful for comprehension, like nothing ever seen or heard.

And when we think of the greatness and glory of God, when we’re brought to remember the grace and goodness of our Father, we’re brought to think:

Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom?

Who can fathom the depth of Your love?

In the sheer ugliness of this dying reality, we are brought, by the Holy Spirit, to sing, that above it all, God is beautiful beyond description, and our Father is majestic, enthroned above.

You can forget everything I rambled about here, and just look up that wonderful chorus – indeed, come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has made my soul sing through it all:

I stand, I stand in awe of You!

Holy God to whom all praise is due,

I stand in awe of You!

I really hope I added some value.
