Christ Revealed Through The Offerings And Sacrifices
facilitated as always by Dox
Recap (from around a month ago) – Jesus is the Power and the Wisdom of God
22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 1 Corinthians 1:22-25
Christ walked the earth in full dependence on the Father. He did not look at the lack but gave thanks to the Father – Before feeding the five thousand, before calling Lazarus forth from the grave.
May we continue to find that He is more than enough in every situation.
Source Scripture: Exodus 19-20
22 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘You have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 You shall not make anything to be with Me—gods of silver or gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves. 24 An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record My name I will come to you, and I will bless you. Exodus 20:22-24
Here, God required burnt offerings… And in Leviticus we read the deeper details of these offerings.
8 Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the LORD.Exodus 19:8
Prior to the offerings and even the Ten Commandments given, the Israelites boasted that they could do everything that the Lord speaks.
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.Romans 3:19-20
Unfortunately for the Israelites they didn’t know that all that the Lord spoke was impossible to totally meet. The reason for the sacrifices is clear.
God instituted the law of sacrifices in the Old Testament to provide a way for people to make
(1) atonement for sins,
11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’ Leviticus 17:11
22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.Hebrews 9:22
(1a) Substitution
4 Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. Leviticus 1:4
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6
Both the sinner and God lay their hand upon Him
(2) maintain a relationship with Him, &
(3) understand the holiness of God and the seriousness of sin.
1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.Leviticus 19:1-2
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will not hear.Isaiah 59:2
(4) a Tutor leading to Christ
24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24
1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. Hebrews 10:1
(5) Cleansing and Removing of Sin
30 For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.Leviticus 16:30
14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?Hebrews 9:14
These sacrifices served as a temporary, symbolic covering for sins and acted as a foreshadowing of the final, perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.Hebrews 9:22
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.Hebrews 10:4
8 Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), 9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.Hebrews 10:8-10
18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.2 Peter 3:18
We’ve been saved from the sacrifices by way of the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ. Here we’re reminded, we’ve also been saved to grow. We grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. We dwell on the Word, and we grow in grace.
Indeed, to Him be the glory now and forever.
SPIRITUAL MATURITY
THE MORE WE UNDERSTAND GOD AND HIS WORD:
The clearer our picture of Jesus becomes
The deeper we fall in love with Him
The more we are transformed from glory to glory
HOW DOES TRANSFORMATION HAPPEN?
By beholding Him.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS TEACHING
THROUGH HIS FINISHED WORK:
• OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN.
• WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD.
• WE ARE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN CHRIST.
• WE ARE HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD.
• WE ARE TRANSFORMED AS WE BEHOLD HIM.
KEY TRUTHS TO REMEMBER
THE LAW WAS GIVEN TO REVEAL OUR INABILITY.
THE LAW BRINGS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN.
THE SACRIFICES REVEAL THE FINISHED WORK OF JESUS.
FIVE OFFERINGS DESCRIBE ONE PERFECT SACRIFICE.
GOD WANTS US TO GROW BEYOND FORGIVENESS INTO FULL REVELATION OF CHRIST.
TRANSFORMATION HAPPENS BY BEHOLDING JESUS.
There were 5 types of sacrifices in all that were discussed through the books of the Law, in Leviticus in particular: The Burnt Offering, the Grain Offering, the Peace Offering, the Sin Offering, and the Trespass or Guilt Offering.
These offerings will be discussed in the next sessions.
Personally, I’m excited to behold Christ in a fuller picture through all this discussed, and all that’s to come.
Although, I also asked, or observed – It’s come out that God immediately responded to the Israelites’ boast by introducing the Law. And I also remember God directing Samuel to anoint Saul, as a response to the Israelites asking God for a king.
As I was writing this one of our folks in the fellowship talked about frustrations they were encountering as husband and wife… and they were led to make a declaration: ‘Lord, enlarge my territory’… but this grew to a bunch of declarations, all based on Psalm 23 and the rest of the Word.
They mentioned that shortly after this declaration, they saw a significant progression in the frustration that they were mourning over.
I told them about this – that I’m having trouble resting. I’m having trouble beholding. I’m frustrated not seeing the Lord moving, and it isn’t helping that I’m seeing it happen for others, but not for me. Granted, it’s according to my flawed expectations but it’s just all making me feel so down.
Response was a reminder to keep beholding. To keep resting. To LABOR to enter into His rest.
His thoughts are greater than our thoughts. His ways are greater than our ways.
And we’re excited to see what else is coming up.
