True Independence (Ps 131) – June 12, 2026 (215/365)

Happy Independence Day, folks.

Thank You, Father, for the reading of Your Word.

Psalm 131

Simple Trust in the LORD

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

1 LORD, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me.

Right. I’m going to have to read a little more about this verse. Other translations indicate David was also saying his heart is not proud, nor are his eyes arrogant.

Jumping into the cross-references now. The app points me to Jeremiah…

“Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: 3 ‘You said, “Woe is me now! For the LORD has added grief to my sorrow. I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.” ’

4 “Thus you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Behold, what I have built I will break down, and what I have planted I will pluck up, that is, this whole land. 5 And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I will bring adversity on all flesh,” says the LORD. “But I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go.” ’ ”Jeremiah 45:2-5

…and to the beloved book of Romans.

16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.Romans 12:16

And here I’m remembering a certain strip by (also beloved) Bill Watterson:

I’m feeling Calvin’s Mom here. Not about to cut people off of my life… But I feel like we’re heading towards something – that is, to ‘simplify, simplify’.

Thoreau risked complication by repetition, in the name of emphasis. Feels like he was speaking to himself.

2 Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me.

3 O Israel, hope in the LORD From this time forth and forever.

There’s some advice. Not necessarily to ignore, definitely not complicating. Simplify. Calm and quiet your soul, in the arms of our everlasting Savior, in whom we place our hope and trust.

Happy Simplification, Calm and Quiet, Hope and Trust.

Happy Independence Day.

Thank You, Father, for the reading of Your Word.

The Lord continue to bless and keep us.
