Thank You, Lord, for the reading of Your Word.
Psalm 115
The Futility of Idols and the Trustworthiness of God
In all our proceedings, in all our plans (those that we actually execute, and those that remain in our heads); With all our burdens, with all our responsibilities (those that we actually confront, and those that we are too cowardly to face); In all our victories, and in all our vanities (those we are aware of, and those that we deny or are outright oblivious about)…
1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, But to Your name give glory, Because of Your mercy, Because of Your truth.
We rejoice always, and we take intentional care to ascribe all glory and praise to the Lord. We give thanks and worship our Father, for His fresh mercies, and His truth that endures through generations. We are thankful for the Holy Spirit that reminds us of His mercy and truth that stands and stays constant through all that threatens to shake and/or distract us.
And this is true as of late, with so much going on, with so much weighing our minds and bodies down. We give glory to the Lord through it all. We trust in the Lord, knowing that we will not be put to shame, sure, but also simply because He is trustworthy. God is trustworthy, a reliable Father.
2 Why should the Gentiles say, “So where is their God?”
3 But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.
And sure, the rest of the world that refuses to believe in Christ would also take it further and deny the existence of God Himself. Or, I don’t know, chances are they can also mock the Flying Spaghetti Monster or the Sky Daddy before they take shots at their ideas of Jesus, with their attempts at pointing out hypocrisy and/or contradiction.
Thing is, we aren’t doubting that the Lord isn’t seen, smelled, touched or tasted – only because, from my point of view, I know that He operates in a reality beyond time and space; in Truth more ‘real’ than fact, that moves facts as it moves.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.2 Corinthians 4:16-18
We don’t deny present existence, but our priority and focus is eternal reality, which are things which are not seen. We hope in what we do not see (Romans 8:24); We walk by faith, and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
4 Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands.
5 They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see;
6 They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell;
7 They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat.
8 Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them.
The Word speaks to us of Truths with eternal value and provides us with revelations with the same infinite quality; revelations that we see, hear and even smell. Truth moves in and through the facts of this reality.
The Word, as in the Scripture, is our tangible Guide to the intangible, our temporal glimpse into the eternal. Through the Word all that we are that is finite senses (sees, hears, smells, touches) and/or projects (speaks, walks) the infinite.
With the increase in knowledge, what was once science fiction can now be real in this existence – flesh-puppets can probably be fitted with near-to-identical human artificial intelligence, so they may have mouths, eyes, ears, noses, hands, feet and throats…
Man, I don’t know where I’m going with this. It seems as if what we’re led to realize here is that through Christ, we truly speak, see, hear, smell, handle, walk, and mutter.
Truly, in Him alone can we live, move and have our being.
God is our great Father who moves as we move; Christ is the Truth that moves, so we move.
9 O Israel, trust in the LORD; He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD; He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD; He is their help and their shield.
12 The LORD has been mindful of us; He will bless us; He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless those who fear the LORD, Both small and great.
We are blessed in this reality, primarily and mainly by the Word. And here, the Word reminds us that we have the Lord as our Help, and as our Shield – thrice. He has and is the Help and Shield of Israel, of the house and descendants of Aaron (the Levites?), and all of us who fear the Lord. The Word says we trust in Him, and He will bless us.
14 May the LORD give you increase more and more, You and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.
16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’s; But the earth He has given to the children of men.
17 The dead do not praise the LORD, Nor any who go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the LORD From this time forth and forevermore. Praise the LORD!
Let us continue to stay focused on our God and Father, and give thanks to Jesus, our Savior and our King.
