The Peace Offering

¹ ‘When his offering is a sacrifice of a peace offering, if he offers it of the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the LORD. ² And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of meeting; and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. ³ Then he shall offer from the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire to the LORD. The fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, ⁴ the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove; ⁵ and Aaron’s sons shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt sacrifice, which is on the wood that is on the fire, as an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD.Leviticus 3:1-5

¹⁵ The flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offering for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day it is offered. He shall not leave any of it until morning. ¹⁶ But if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice; but on the next day the remainder of it also may be eaten; ¹⁷ the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day must be burned with fire.Leviticus 7:15-17

Peace offerings were rendered as thanksgiving for divine help and blessing. Today, we enjoy peace with God through Jesus Christ, our Peace Offering.

¹ Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, ² through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. ³ And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; ⁴ and perseverance, character; and character, hope. ⁵ Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.Romans 5:1-5

¹⁹ For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, ²⁰ and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.Colossians 1:19-20

13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17 And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.Ephesians 2:13-18

The portion of the priests:

³¹ And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. ³² Also the right thigh you shall give to the priest as a heave offering from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. ³³ He among the sons of Aaron, who offers the blood of the peace offering and the fat, shall have the right thigh for his part. ³⁴ For the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever.’ ” Leviticus 7:31-34

Observe the breast; It typifies affection, and the thighs typify strength. We feed off the strength and affection of the Father. This makes this offering even more a thanksgiving offering.

All of this is a celebration of our peace with God. All sin has been settled at the cross. Christ became ALL sin and not just our old sin, that we would be His righteousness.

God has never been soft with sin, and with that in mind it’s only expected for Him to ensure that sin was dealt with completely. If sin was not completely removed, the Law was not completely satisfied, and Christ would not have risen from the dead.

Sin was decisively and completely dealt with. The wages of sin have been fully paid. Sin has no dominion over us, and death no longer has a hold on us. Flesh has absolutely no power over us.

Acceptable Animals for the Peace Offering:

They should be domesticated animals. Wild animals cannot be tamed, nor can they be a picture of the obedient Jesus.

Birds (Doves, pigeons) represent folks who have a smaller perspective of God, and a smaller appreciation of Christ and His finished work.

The Law of the Peace Offering:

¹¹ This is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which he shall offer to the LORD: ¹² If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer, with the sacrifice of thanksgiving, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers anointed with oil, or cakes of blended flour mixed with oil. ¹³ Besides the cakes, as his offering he shall offer leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offering. ¹⁴ And from it he shall offer one cake from each offering as a heave offering to the LORD. It shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offering.

¹⁵ The flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offering for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day it is offered. He shall not leave any of it until morning. Leviticus 7:11-15

Here, we read that leavened bread was acceptable. This is a reminder that even in our best worship or in our prime condition, we still have some leaven – as we are in this world, we are still present in sin.

But here’s the thing – we offer unleavened bread BEFORE that which has been leavened. The perfect Jesus (anointed with the Holy Spirit, as oil poured on unleavened bread) is acknowledged before our own failures.

We give thanks, knowing that we are (1) unacceptable on our own but (2) set apart and accepted only through Christ.

We must daily thank God for Christ’s sacrifice and His protection. As the offering is consumed on the same day, we eat of the benefits today, and then tomorrow is another offering.

Thanksgiving isn’t meant to be stored, as manna. God’s mercies are new with every morning. We take Him in daily, and give thanks, remembering Christ.

3 TYPES OF PEACE OFFERINGS:

To GIVE THANKS to the LORD (Leviticus 7:11-15)

To FULFILL A VOW (Leviticus 7:16)

To VOLUNTEER an offering in a sense of GRATITUDE and CONSECRATION to God (Leviticus 7:16)

¹⁶ But if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice; but on the next day the remainder of it also may be eaten; ¹⁷ the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day must be burned with fire.Leviticus 7:16-17

While we don’t make vows today as in the Old Testament sense, we still recognize commitments and vows (Marriage, Consecration, etc).

Our earthly commitments belong to this present age, but one day the third day shall come, when Christ shall return; Then, these commitments shall give way to our union with Christ.

Jesus is our perfect peace offering, and in Him we experience peace in our daily lives.

We have peace with God, peace with our conscience and ourselves, peace with each other, and peace with our families.

The Lord is our Shepherd who makes us lie down in green pastures; He keeps us in perfect peace as we stay our eyes on Him.

The organs represent aspects of Christ’s character that have been offered in our place.

The fat represents the finest portion. We refer to the choicest parts of real estate as the fat of the land.

The kidneys represents completion and perfection. Root words also link it to confidence and trust. Christ had confidence in His Father.

The fatty lobe represents glory… Didn’t catch how exactly but yeah, we thank God for His excellence, His perfect trust, His completeness and His overflowing glory.

We’d do well to recognize and appreciate these on a daily basis. We give thanks for today, and in anticipation of the days to come.

All this resonates to me, especially where Psalm 23 was mentioned. Christ is our Good Shepherd who ensures that we are not only protected, but also kept in peace.

We have peace through Jesus Christ, and it’s a peace for yesterday, a peace for today, and a peace for tomorrow. As Christ is our timeless Savior, so He is our timeless, eternal peace.

And not only is this a restorative peace, but it is also a peace representative of God’s power, wisdom and love. It’s a peace that not only brings recovery, but allows us to move forth with confidence.

I still proclaim that I’m at an all time low… but it’s here where these messages are all the more enjoyed. In Tagalog, hindi ako aahon sa sarili kong lakas; Kasama ko ang Panginoon, ang aking Dakilang Pastor.

I’m not going to rise above the waters by my own strength. I am with Christ, I am with God, my Faithful Shepherd. I have peace. I shall not want.

I’m reminded of what I keep on preaching – I don’t see visible improvement of my circumstances but I still have peace. I have Christ. Christ is my Peace. Christ is my Shepherd who keeps me in Peace.

I’m at peace because He is glorious. I’m at peace because He is trustworthy and faithful. He is completely excellent, and we are excellently completed in Him… In spite of ALL things, He is our superior Peace.

Jesus is our perfect peace offering, and in Him we experience peace in our daily lives.

We have peace with God, peace with our conscience and ourselves, peace with each other, and peace with our families.

Other takes:

There’s reason and cause for us to offer thanksgiving to God on a daily basis, versus just singing on Sunday.
Not everyone can afford the animals, but everyone can afford the flour. Our thanksgiving is ALWAYS accompanied with the unleavened, anointed Bread of Life, whether we acknowledge it or not. It’s really up to us to appreciate it. There is benefit in appreciating Christ daily.
- Christ is our Excellence. In the Thanksgiving, the leavened bread is NOTHING without the excellent, unleavened, anointed Bread.
It’s an offering made in faith; It’s an offering made FOR and FROM peace.
Sandals of peace were mentioned. These sandals were given to the prodigal son to remind him that he is separate, above the earth. It’s a picture of holiness. We have peace because we were set apart for Him.
It’s a new perspective to thanksgiving. True thanksgiving is not without Christ. In beholding Christ, we cannot help but give thanks. In giving thanks, we are brought to remembrance.
- There is a difference in moving impressed. The excellence of your expression is dependent from how impressed you are in Christ’s excellence. But, yes, there’s no impression where there is no personal understanding.
Abiding in Christ:
- Living rooted and rested.
- It’s not trying to hold on to Christ, it’s living knowing Christ never lets us go.
- It’s not about our being excellent in everything; It’s experiencing His excellence in everything.
Fighting for your blessing also means fighting the old self that insists it’s still alive.
