Playing catch-up here. No excuses. Let’s go.
Thank You, Lord, for the reading of Your Word.
Psalm 72
Glory and Universality of the Messiah’s Reign
A Psalm of Solomon.
1 Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son.
2 He will judge Your people with righteousness, And Your poor with justice.
I believe this gives us a more detailed perspective of Christ as our Messiah; We can see all in this composition as additional details on who He is and how He operates.
For example, in these verses, we see how righteousness is the root of judgment, just as righteousness is the basis of how justice is defined.
Once, our own judgments and our own definitions of justice have been flawed as a result of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, when they partook of the fruit of the knowledge of Good and Evil.
We were on our own. Now, here’s what’s nice. Because of Christ and His finished work, we have been made righteous – that means, we’re no longer on our own. We have been reconciled to the Creator of the Universe, the Maker of Time and Space; We have been reunited with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, much so that we call Him our Father.
We have been reconciled to the one and only righteous God; Therefore, we are able to judge with righteousness; We are able to minister judgment to the Lord’s poor and afflicted.
3 The mountains will bring peace to the people, And the little hills, by righteousness.
4 He will bring justice to the poor of the people; He will save the children of the needy, And will break in pieces the oppressor.
5 They shall fear You As long as the sun and moon endure, Throughout all generations.
6 He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, Like showers that water the earth.
7 In His days the righteous shall flourish, And abundance of peace, Until the moon is no more.
8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.
9 Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him, And His enemies will lick the dust.
Christ, the Messiah moves the mountains and the hills; From them peace and righteousness shall flow. Looking at the AMP, it explains this in more detail: The mountains will bring peace and prosperity to the people, And the hills, in [the establishment of] righteousness.
We see more into the justice that He brings to His poor and needy; He not only brings vindication to us, but He also crushes the power of those who would oppress us – much so that they shall be brought to fear Him, ‘throughout all generations‘.
This, for me, has been proven at least in the recent days. We have received vindication, and while we have not seen the oppressor crushed before our eyes, I believe our Father has worked beyond sight and perception, that they have been brought to fear Him.
And we see the same pattern in verses 6-9; As Christ moves throughout creation, so He moves accordingly towards people.
The righteous – Those who have come to believe in Him and His finished work – shall flourish in abundance of peace, just as rain falls upon uncut grass, just as showers that water the earth.
Those who flee before Him and declare themselves as His enemies shall see His dominion from one end of the ocean to the other, and they shall bow before Him, so low that they lick the dust of the earth.
10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles Will bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba Will offer gifts.
11 Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him.
12 For He will deliver the needy when he cries, The poor also, and him who has no helper.
13 He will spare the poor and needy, And will save the souls of the needy.
14 He will redeem their life from oppression and violence; And precious shall be their blood in His sight.
Rulers and heads of nations shall come to offer presents and gifts to the Messiah; These kings and their nations shall fall before Him, and serve Him – all because of what He has done for those of us who have come to believe in Him.
Even the nations and their rulers will be in such awe as they bear witness to our deliverance and our salvation; I believe they shall respond with praise as they see how we who have placed trust in Him are redeemed from oppression and violence.
15 And He shall live; And the gold of Sheba will be given to Him; Prayer also will be made for Him continually, And daily He shall be praised.
16 There will be an abundance of grain in the earth, On the top of the mountains; Its fruit shall wave like Lebanon; And those of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
17 His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed.
Give gifts and adoration; Oh, join the nations and kings in giving praise to Christ, our Savior! For through Him we are able to pray without ceasing; Through Christ we are able to praise daily and rejoice, always!
18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things!
19 And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.
20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.
Going through this portion of Scripture, and seeing how the composition ends as it did in verse 20, I feel as if these were the words that were going through the mind of once-mighty King David, as power transitioned between him and his son and successor, Solomon.
These words were as encouraging as they were prophetic, bringing – as that one famous hymn goes – strength for today, just as much as we receive such bright hope for tomorrow.
For, see, in the twilight of David’s life, he expresses joy birthed from the fact and truth that Christ, King of Kings off of his bloodline, redeems, restores, revives, rescues and renews all who place their trust in Him…
…and, at the end of time and space, when ‘the moon is no more‘, all kings and nations shall fall before Him, giving glory to His name… for His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed.
