Leadership Mentoring – Ephesians
facilitated by Ptr Joedy
15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,
16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers:
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,
18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church,
23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Ephesians 1:15-23
Why did Paul pray this specifically for the Ephesians?
As leaders, we do need the spirit of wisdom and revelation. We need insights, we need it to serve in our discernment. Leaders are discerners, placed on the spot, needing to be decisive and responsive.
Revelation is important in that it is divine insight, coming from the Lord. It’s important for leaders because by revelation we are guided and directed, and we are also given more insight into God’s plan.
Ptr. Joedy specifies that this is revelation ‘in the knowledge of God‘; It’s revelation according to the heart and will of our Creator, and as such we are able to see clearer into not only His plans, but also His actions.
How do we receive revelation?
We would pray, we would worship, we would intentionally seek Him in the sense that we would spend time with Him, with a heightened awareness of His presence, of the move of the Holy Spirit.
We would also see more of Him, undoubtedly, as we consult His Word.
What IS revelation, anyway? Is reading a verse counted as revelation? Well, I believe it is, if it was brought to our attention, or rather, revealed through the Holy Spirit.
Revelation from the Greek is revealing, unveiling, uncovering; And it could come from our reading of the Word, or from the words of the brethren.
Revelation is the discovery of the deeper meaning of a verse. It’s what comes out when we double down on the words of Scripture. The agent of revelation is the Holy Spirit.
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.1 Corinthians 2:9-10
God uses many ways to reveal, to unveil, or to uncover. We could be preaching, or listening to a preaching. We could be worshipping, or leading worship, exhorting, or listening to exhortations. But one of the main ways that God gives revelation is through meditation.
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.Joshua 1:8
In our day and age, we meditate on the entire Word of God, the Bible. We think on what is written over and over again, whispering it out for emphasis and for focus if necessary. We’d keep going back on it, as the cow chews the cud – literally digesting the Word beginning at our mouth; And then, the deeper meanings would come forth.
The more we meditate on the truth of God’s Word, the Holy Spirit brings out deeper meanings, deeper interpretations and realizations coming from our Father.
1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.Psalms 1:1-2
We’d do well to open and close our days, meditating on the Word day and night.
Did you know that there’s something in you that does not go to sleep? Ptr Joedy says it’s our spirit that doesn’t slumber. It’s what meditates, it’s what dwells on the Word as the rest of our being is resting. Perhaps this is where dreams come from? Speaking of, I have been dreaming here and there recently.
So Paul prayed for the Ephesians to receive the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation. Furthermore, he declared that our eyes would be enlightened to (1) the hope of His calling, (2) the riches of the glory of His inheritance, and (3) the exceeding greatness of His power toward us.
First, His calling is for us to be His sons and daughters; Christ Himself is our Hope, and He Himself calls us to be reconciled to God, to call Him our Father. We were chosen before the foundation of the world, loved before creation to share in His glory, enjoying Him as our Father.
What are the key words to consider in ‘the riches of the glory of His inheritance’? Do we zero in on riches? What is the glory of His inheritance? What is His inheritance – or is it necessary for us to know, more than we know that we are co-heirs with Christ?
Authority is the glory of His inheritance – along with love, peace, patience, joy, faithfulness, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. There is power in the riches that are revealed to us in meditation.
And I suppose the exceeding greatness of His power toward us – is simply the glory associated to Christ’s being given the name above every other name, coming from His obedience unto death AND His resurrection, and His ascension.
All this combined would have us take in His power in our meditation, and the power of Christ’s resurrection is made known whenever we move – not merely in the skill of our spoken delivery, but in the glory that is seen in us, communicated non-verbally.
We give all the glory to the Lord Jesus Christ, for His faithfulness towards us, and for all He has done, for all He continues to do. We thank Him for the Spirit of revelation and the Spirit of wisdom poured out upon each and every one of us.
We continue to dwell on His Word, and our eyes shall continue to be opened to His glory and His grace… consequently, our mouths shall testify of His greatness, and His goodness.
All for unity in the body of Christ, all for the expansion of His kingdom, and all for the glory of His name. Amen.
