Happy New Year, folks. We’re going to keep writing, keep unloading. We’re going to keep learning, unlearning and relearning. We’re going to keep realizing, we’re going to keep pondering, we’re going to keep going deeper and deeper.
And in all of it, we’re going to keep praying, and we’re going to keep thanking our Lord; Indeed, year after year, we’re going to be thankful. Grateful.
Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and goodwill to all men!
Psalm 1
The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly
1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.
So, sure, we’ve been pondering on this Psalm in particular… As always, during the first part of the year, but also actually before 2025 ended, with a little more emphasis on where it states how we would be as trees, ‘bringing forth its fruit in its season‘… all with the overall theme I’ve thought of for 2026 – that this year is a year of Fruitfulness.
I’ve given attention to where it mentions in the verse prior, that in order for us to be as fruitful trees, we ought to find delight in the Word of God. Yes, I’m emphasizing that we aren’t only going to be looking into the law of the LORD, but we shall look at all of the Word – simply because it all points to Christ. The Word points to Christ, and the law points to Christ – and, it is by Christ, through Christ and in Christ that we are fruitful.
I suppose we should be putting the first verse into consideration too, at least in our elaboration of what it means to abide in Christ, and not only to abide in Him, but to delight in Him. Because, sure, while it means dwelling on the Word and the Law of the Lord, it also means that we choose who we find counsel with.
We hear the counsel of the ungodly, but we are not determined to walk in their paths… Nor do we sit in the seat of the scornful, nor do we stand in the path of sinners. But here’s the thing. The Psalmist compares us to a tree planted by streams of water – Not as people dwelling by the river, not as beasts brought to the water; We don’t move, but we are BROUGHT and PLANTED by the streams.
Our focus ought not to be where we are, or who we’re with – because regardless of these factors, we are always close to the water. We’re to be thankful for the water, delighting in the Word, and focused on Christ, as He is focused on us, even if we are among who the Psalmist calls the ungodly, the sinners, and the scornful.
We ought to always remember that we are always delighting in the Word, and the Word is always alive in us… because Christ is the Living Word, and the Word of Life.
We aren’t easily blown away, as chaff. We are planted by streams of living water. Established by the water, we bear fruit in its season – according to the Vine.
Abiding in Christ isn’t as much a work as it is delighting in His presence, and appreciating how He is always with us – never leaving us, never forsaking us.
Thank You, Lord. Amen.
