Reinforcement (Psalm 76) – May 17, 2025 (195/365)

Let’s keep it going here. I think I have more in my mind that needs to be let out.

Psalm 76

Who Can Stand Before You?

TO THE CHOIRMASTER: WITH STRINGED INSTRUMENTS. A PSALM OF ASAPH. A SONG.

In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel.

His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion.

There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah

We need to shift from God being our Helper – I mean, that’s a very good thought to keep in our minds, but apparently, after going through these first portions of Psalm 76, we are reminded that any memory of God’s helping us is not without a realization of God’s absolute greatness and glory.

And it’s not merely limited to a statement – We see in the skies, the clouds, the sunrise and sunset; We see in the greatest of sequoias, down to the smallest of sprouts – to the greatly fearsome beasts of the land and sea, to the most delicate of winged creations gliding across the heavens… We see all this, and would not help but say: God, God is great. His name is great. His name is known in Judah and Israel, and across the nations, from one end of the continents to the other.

What a terrifying Creator, who commands lightning with His fingers, and entire atmospheres with His breath! What a great King of Kings indeed, Warrior of warriors prepared with His arrows, shield and sword!

Glorious are you, more majestic than the mountains full of prey.

The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; all the men of war were unable to use their hands.

At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned.

But you, you are to be feared!

Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused?

From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, when God arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth. Selah

How CAN we stand before the mention of our God and King, our Creator?

Yet, for His infinite glory, His endless and borderless power, He had it in His heart, to not only execute and establish judgment… but, see, in the last portions of this part of Scripture, we read that He also brings salvation – He saves all the humble of the earth.

Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt.

Make your vows to the LORD your God and perform them; let all around him bring gifts to him who is to be feared, who cuts off the spirit of princes, who is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

Oh, brethren, that we would remember our place when we realize the sheer infinite glory of our God and Creator. May His glory and greatness cause us NOT to turn away, but to be even more dependent on His love and His mercy! For all is nothing apart from Him, and in Him, He who is Everything gives Everything to us. It is only in the presence of our mighty God and Father that we are truly safe..

…and we have nobody else to thank. Truly, we cannot take any credit for the safety and security we live in now… No, all glory belongs to Christ, the savior and lover of our souls. It is only by His love and compassion, and by His finished work that we have been reconciled to God, that we are able to call Him our Father. It is only through Christ that we have the Holy Spirit as the mark of our salvation; The Spirit of Adoption that has us seeing the Creator as our Father is the same Spirit that convicts us of our righteousness, no matter what we encounter, no matter what befalls us, no matter what we bring ourselves into in this finite reality.

Trust in God, o my Soul. Bless the Lord, and forget not His benefits.

Cast all your burdens upon Him, o my Soul. Rejoice, pray, and give thanks in all circumstances.

Do not be anxious, o my Soul; Lift all up to Him in prayer, and receive the peace that goes beyond all understanding.

Our God is good and great. He deserves all the glory, indeed.

Thank You, Father, for everything! Amen.
