Psalm 40
My Help and My Deliverer
TO THE CHOIRMASTER. A PSALM OF DAVID.
1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.
We give all glory and honor to the Lord our God, for, indeed, when sudden calamity shows up, we shall not be shaken – He hears us, and not only does He hear us, but He inclines to us, listening to us;
And, we’re able to make the same claim of our God as the Israelites did in the Old Testament – because of Christ and His finished work, the demonstration of God’s everlasting love for all who believe – both Jew and Gentile.
Therefore, we’re able to continue – and while we are already comforted knowing that our God, who is our Father, hears us and listens to us, behold: We can claim it for our brethren, as much as we claim it for ourselves…
Yes, that our Father also draws us up from the pit of destruction. When we find ourselves in the miry bog, our Father draws us up. And He doesn’t stop there! For sure as Christ is our Firm Foundation, He sets our feet from shaky mud, to a solid Rock.
In times of trouble and stress, in times of turmoil and of uncertainty, we rejoice with new songs of praise, indeed! For our Father not only rescues us from drowning or being smothered; Our Father makes our steps secure.
Indeed, come and hear, and hear us proclaim – trust in the Lord!
4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!
5 You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.
6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
We are blessed, for we trust in the Lord; We seek Him first and foremost for our counsel, for we know He is Truth, devoid of lies.
Oh, yes, Father, not only have you kept us from the pit and the bog, but you have also delivered us from the lies – both those we tell ourselves, or those we allow the world to speak and scream to us.
Oh, Lord, You do not delay in being our Truth, and shining Truth as a light into our lives! Thank You!
And You don’t stop there, for indeed, You are always thinking of us – as Your disciple Peter proclaimed, You care for us, and here we read that You not only have, but You MULTIPLY Your wondrous deeds and thoughts toward us…
…much so, that we are so in awe of Your incomparable goodness, that, again, even in our distress, we find it in us to proclaim of Your goodness and glory, overflowing, ALWAYS overflowing.
7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
9 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD.
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
Indeed, how could we keep Your goodness to ourselves? It is, as You said, Lord Jesus – as a light that cannot be hidden.
By Your grace, Father, and by Your finished work, Jesus, and by Your power, o Holy Spirit – we receive Life, Light and Love, and we naturally shine it for the world to see.
And not only do we display Your goodness and glory, God – No, again, You overflow it in our hearts, that we could not help but speak of Your faithfulness, Your deliverance, Your steadfast love; Yes, even in the darkest and most trying of times!
What more can we say, what more can we do, but to thank You, Father? For You gave us Your Son, as the Author and Finisher of our Faith – our Book is being co-authored by our Good Shepherd!
You fulfilled the visions of the Prophets, who proclaimed that You would give us a heart of flesh, and an obedient heart – Indeed, through Christ being our living Word, we enjoy these visions as our present reality!
Indeed, the Good Shepherd is also our Living Word – and in Him we live, and move, and have our being.
May the world continue to hear our testimony, even in our distress.
11 As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!
12 For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see;
they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.
We have been blindsided, we have been caught off guard. Our vulnerabilities have been exploited, and we are in danger.
But even so, Father, we praise Your name! For it is within these times that we see Your mercies that are new every morning, Your steadfast love that never ceases no matter what, and Your great faithfulness, here and now!
Thank You, Father! Thank You for blessing and keeping us, and all that concerns us, and all we’re concerned about; Indeed, You cause Your love, mercy and faithfulness to be known even in the most difficult of obstructions, in the most complicated of problems, and in the most hopeless of scenarios – They impact us, Father, we admit… but it is Christ who continues to overwhelm us.
13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me!
14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
Thank You, Father, for You help us in ways we are unaware of – much more reason for us to trust in You.
Indeed, Father; Not only are the stakes high, but the odds are against us… But, Lord, You ARE My Lord. You save me, You deliver me.
Father, You help me. I raise issue after issue to You, again and again, and I am thankful that in our prayers, You respond by pouring out peace that goes beyond understanding.
Again I am reminded, Father, of Your steadfast love, of Your faithfulness and mercy. It is present in ALL.
Father, You know what’s up. You know what I’m working on, You know what I’m worried about.
Father, You know what’s been eating me, what’s been bothering me, what I can’t move on from.
You know what’s sticking to me, what I’m stubborn about.
You know what’s going on around me, and within me – the struggles, the threats, the dangers…
…and not only to me, but to those I hold dear and close to my heart as well.
But, Lord, I suppose I’m just taking this time, to just lift all of it up to You. To say, in spite of all of this, that I still and will always trust in You: Not by my power or might, but by Your Holy Spirit.
You sustain me, even through all of this, and, I am thankful.
Thank You, Father, for Christ – My redemption, my reconciliation, my vindication, my rescue, my joy, my self-control…
Thank You, Jesus. You are my Everything, indeed.
Help us, Father.
16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the LORD!”
17 As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!
The Lord is close to us in our greatest of pains, in the deepest of betrayals.
The Lord is for us, and not against us, knowing all there is to know about us at every moment, and still choosing to love us.
By His grace and by the Holy Spirit, we are directed, as ministers, to invoke, and to provoke reconciliation, as we have been reconciled to our Father.
As the Holy Spirit points us to Jesus, so we remind others of Jesus. We point others to Jesus, when they have so much more in their sights.
May we be vigilant yet gracious – to remind our brethren of Christ, God’s goodness and glory demonstrated and manifested, in all times and in all situations.
May the Lord be glorified in our circumstances, problems and conflicts.
Greater is He that lives in us, than He that lives in the world.
All hail the power of Jesus’ name,
let angels, prostrate, fall!
Bring forth the royal diadem and crown Him Lord of all!
Bring forth the royal diadem and crown Him Lord of all!
