Run down:
John 20 – Mary’s Encounter with Jesus
Mary went to the tomb to find it empty, goes back to tell Peter and John.
- “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”John 20:2
They race to the tomb. John wins and they both see linen cloth folded. They go home.
Mary stays, weeping, and stoops in to look at the tomb.
Mary sees two angels in white, sitting where Jesus’ body had lain, one at the head, one at the foot.
- They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”John 20:13
Mary turns and sees Jesus, but she did not recognize Him.
- 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).John 20:15-16
Mary goes to the disciples: “I have seen the Lord” John 20:18
John 20 – Jesus appears to the Disciples
Same day, in the evening, the doors were locked where the disciples were ‘for fear of the Jews‘.
Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
John 20:19-23
Thomas was not with them at the time. Disciples who were there also said, “We have seen the Lord“.
Thomas wants proof. I want to see His hands, and touch them and His side.
Eight days later, disciples and Thomas were gathered. Doors were locked again.
Jesus came and stood among them again, saying again, “Peace be with you.”.
Jesus goes to Thomas: “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”John 20:27-29
John 21 – Jesus appears to the Disciples, again
2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.John 21:2-3
Jesus stood on the shore, asking if they have any fish, then telling them to cast the net on the right side of the boat.
Pulled in so much fish that they could not haul it in.
John recognizes Jesus (‘It is the Lord!’), Peter takes his outer garment off and swims to Jesus.
Jesus had fish and bread on a charcoal fire, called the disciples for breakfast.
‘…Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.‘ John 21:12
John 21 – Jesus talks to Peter
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
Jesus rebuked Peter, telling him he would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed. Now He asks him three times, if he loves Him.
The Good Shepherd tells the fisherman to feed and tend to His sheep.
18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Peter asks, well, what about John?
- 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” John 21:22
Verses to go through and sort of think about:
Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”John 20:17
- Mary couldn’t touch Him, but Thomas could touch His scars? (Or rather, Jesus offered for Thomas to touch His hands and His side?)
Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29
- That means all of us, right?
Mary saw Jesus but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said Mary’s name, and she responded, ‘Teacher!’
Jesus told Thomas to touch His scars, and he responded, ‘My Lord and my God!’
The disciples saw Jesus on the shore, but they did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus told them to cast the net on the right side, and when they were overwhelmed by the fish, John said, ‘It is the Lord!’, and Peter swam towards Him (versus the first time this miracle happened, before His death and resurrection, where Peter said ‘get away from me, a sinner!’)
They had breakfast with Jesus, and they knew it was the Lord.
‘know the Lord’, serving God (Love the Lord with all…) vs. ‘Mary!’, ‘look at how I served You’
Thoughts, coming from earlier messages:
John 12-16: Love one another
John 17: Pray for each other
John 18-19: Christ, at the cross: ‘It is Finished‘
- The pinnacle of God’s everlasting love, the answer to Christ’s prayer.
- The veil was torn, and as we could now enter the Holy of Holies, more importantly, God came to us. (“All the earth will declare that Your love is everywhere”)
- Reconciliation. Christ became sin and died, so we who would believe become His righteousness unto eternal life.
- Our old selves have died to sin and flesh, raised as new creations to righteousness and the Spirit.
Here, in John 20-21:
The risen Christ: ‘Peace be with you‘.
- We who would believe have now become His righteousness unto eternal life.
- We have been raised as new creations to righteousness and the Spirit.
- The resurrection was the receipt of our righteousness. We believe and proclaim that we ourselves have been made new Creations.
The cross was Daniel, lowered into the pit of lions
The empty tomb was Daniel, lifted up, harmless, while his enemies (and their families) were thrown into judgment.
The cross was the Stone hitting the iron and clay feet of the statue, symbolizing the end of all empires.
The empty tomb was the beginning of the Stone becoming an kingdom with no end.
The cross was the End, the empty tomb was the Beginning.
Didn’t finish with this but it would’ve been nice.
4 But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” Daniel 12:4
25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. John 21:25
I’m glad we closed Q1, and we closed this very challenging series off well, today. I don’t know where we’re headed next, but I’m just going to relax, if only for a moment, before getting into that.
Until the next post, God bless us all. Amen.
