Day 2 Morning Session, Good News Community Church Leadership Summit II
Repeated 7 Practices of Effective Ministry // Ptr. John M.
Summarized first Four Practices: (1) Clarify the Win, (2) Think Steps, Not Programs, (3) Narrow the Focus, (4) Teach Less For More.
Not really listening to the speaker, but I will share my insights.
(5) Listen To Outsiders – Just like the Feedback principle in Ultralearning. Outside perspective is critical and cannot be ignored. Even less constructive and emotionally charged criticism can be converted to data when correct and level analysis is applied.
(6) Replace Yourself – Does NOT necessarily mean Duplicate or Clone yourself. I feel that it’s more about spending time with people more than giving them everything. Spend more time than money with your children. Hard feat to follow, possibly even impossible… but it’s worth a try.
(7) Work On It – It’s in the application where the real learning happens. You learn with projects more than in reading and/or listening. In application you encounter more real time lessons, and more encounters with outsiders. The real learning is in the work.
My Faith Story // Ptra. Leah N.
Set the disclaimer, she’s going to testify much more than she’s going to preach.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.
Psalms 20:7-8
We all have our own stories – and these aren’t just any stories.
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21
At one point, obviously before she received and believed in Christ, she was sick, and was healed by God. When she was healed, the only way she thought to ‘give back’ to the Lord was to be a nun… But she expresses that the Lord had other plans.
She shares that she continued to get sick, and at one moment she was on her way home with her mother (coming from the local shaman or arbularyo), that’s when she encountered who would eventually be her future husband – a pastor who was, at the time, doing church planting.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Psalms 139:14
Even as she was sharing this, she was not only sharing her physical afflictions, but she shared that she was also dealing with insecurity. However, as the Word was shared to her, she started realizing just how much she is loved.
Going back to the fateful meeting. The pastor began doing Bible studies at their house, and this was during the same time that she was still religiously going to mass and joining the choir; At the time, she was at first observant and needed some convincing to attend.
It seems that is was in singing and in worship that their relationship began having its roots… and they started interacting through the Bible Study. However, she was also reminded, that she needed be prepared to commit to and to maintain a relationship.
So going back to Proverbs 19:21, she reiterates and reminds us that we may have our plans AND desires, but it’s the Lord who prepares us for His superior plan. With that, she said that they eventually got married, and emphasized – this was by the grace of God.
But apparently this wasn’t the happy ever after ending. With the relationship, with the marriage came its difficulties – especially when it came to being married to a pastor who (apparently) didn’t have money, or at least a solid income. For four years they’ve had those struggles… and then she decided to resign from her job and accept her own ordination as a Pastor’s wife.
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
2 Corinthians 9:6
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Galatians 6:7
She was well aware of the difficulties of being married to a minister – if she wasn’t realizing it on her own, she was being given reminders by her family. However, she seemed to insinuate that when she embraced her role as a pastor’s wife, they saw how well taken care of they were by the Lord.
…because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 1:5-6
With all this shared, she was proud to share that though they only had one child, their churches just kept giving birth. She announced their presence and representation at the summit. Ended the message with a call to sing ‘Still’ by Hillsong Worship.
“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
2 Corinthians 10:17
We ought to be willing to get our hands dirty, and not be afraid to get scars along the way. We move in confidence knowing that the Lord is with us and for us.
