(from November Thought Compilation)
Though we see the waves of the ocean generally pushed towards the shore, notice how there are waves that bounce off the shore, back into the ocean.
We can understand a portion of all that is going on, within our limited capacity… But let us never presume that we could understand it all, much less contain it. No, it is the One who made the winds and the sea fully understands the order in the chaos of the waves; After all, He is the One who rose and rebuked the winds and the sea.
And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” – Matthew 8:23-27
Now, this is as far as I went when I put it all down… Added a little to it, but now that I’m reading it again, I’m tempted to dive in a little deeper.
Take note that in this moment, the men with Christ marveled that even creation – the sea, representing water, and the winds, representing air, obeyed Him. In His rebuke He demonstrated His superiority over we who, at the Garden of Eden, were told to have dominion but NOT over water and air, but ‘fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’
I go through all this to specify that this is the extent of the dominion that we have been entrusted with, from the very start. Although it is nice for us, as Pentecostals, to ‘speak’ to the hurricanes and to the floods, the dominion that we have is limited to a mere portion of creation.
I don’t know, I guess what I’m really driving at here is that we simply cannot believe that our incantations of prosperity, miracles, and ultimately better circumstances here in this world would ‘work’, with our insistence that we have ‘faith’, and/or it will happen according to our limited expectations. But what I DO know and what I can with with certainty is, after the charge to Adam at the Garden of Eden, and after Christ’s demonstration of His superior dominion over more than the fish and the birds, but the actual sea and sky themselves – yes, after these observations, after Christ’s ultimate miracle – His death and resurrection, it was before He ascended to heaven where He told His disciples, the bottom line, and the ultimate charge:
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
Christ has been given all authority and dominion over the heavens and the earth. In His authority, we are told, beyond taking dominion over the fish, the birds, and the beasts of the land – Go, and make disciples of all nations.
If we are to speak, let us move beyond the trivial mystical and actually metaphysical (as in, ‘abstract theory with no basis in reality’) ‘speaking’, to the waves and to the storms. Realize that it was Christ who spoke to the fig tree. It was Christ alone who had the faith, unhindered by sin and flesh – the same faith that commands mountains to move to the sea. It was this same Christ who told us to make disciples of all nations.
But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.Acts 20:24
If we are to speak, let us speak the good news. Let us speak, let us testify to the gospel of the grace of God.
If we are to speak, let us speak Christ.
