To you, O LORD, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me, lest, if you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.
Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy (innermost) sanctuary.
Psalms 28:1-2
To the Lord I cry, and to the Lord alone – for even if I am heard by the world and all within the confines of time and space, I am just as doomed as the rest of reality. It is only the Lord, my true Rock, the Rock of Salvation – only upon Him am I raised up and brought to safety.
So deep are the wounds inflicted upon this world by sin, so deep and twisted, that the resultant confusion leaves us questioning our own standing; It is in the realization of this fact that I cry out – not for relief, not for provision, not even for rescue; Not rescue, before we cry out and raise up our pleas for mercy: Mercy, and pure mercy that can only come from He who is blameless; The only true Mercy that could come from His most holy, and innermost sanctuary, infinitely superior as Creator is superior to creation.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
Psalms 51:1-3
I have learned two things – Or rather, I am reminded of two things today: (1) Our absolute hopelessness and our impossible situation in sin, and (2) the everlasting and infinite superiority of Christ and the overwhelming impact of His salvation.
Christ is our Mercy. He is God’s mercy bestowed upon each and every one of us who would give Him even the slightest bit of consideration, if only that our eyes would be opened to the Truth that this mercy that is for us is as high as the heavens are above the earth.
He is same mercy that only God could give, mercy that is new and fresh with every morning. If we enjoyed yesterday’s mercy in awe of its sheer heights, I imagine that it’s even more exciting for us to take in the Truth that these same great mercies are poured out today, and then fresh mercy tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day…
Blessed be the LORD! For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.
The LORD is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!
Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
Psalms 28:6-9
It’s only during the worst of times, and the most testing of times where we see just how great of a mercy we have in Christ
And it is only when we see such mercy that we also see what a great Savior we have in Christ.
What a humbling, and at the same time empowering Truth.
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
