As usual, writing off of endorphins, caffeine and recovering from reckless dopamine. In all this, the mandate still remains, the Word stands and resonates from this heart made new by Christ:
Be still, and know that God is who He says He is.
Wait on the Lord, and renew your strength.
In His presence is peace beyond understanding, and joy unspeakable.
I’m supposed to be composing the service flow for something that’s happening in a little more than an hour from now, but I would like to just allow my brain, my soul and my spirit to flow, as my body just flowed.
Hah. I just got off on the punching bag, now it’s time to release by way of the notebook – or, okay, the keyboard.
Thank You, Jesus, for the blood You shed, which we explicitly remember today.
Thank You, Father, for the reading of Your Word.
Psalm 62
A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God
To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
1 Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
3 How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.
4 They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly.
Selah
Looking at the title of this composition, I’m led to believe that David was calm.. at least it looked like it on the onset.
Looking through a couple verses in, and, well, it couldn’t be helped – David was on the defensive. Not to say that he shifted from calm to tense, but, it just encourages us to be honest – because even in the calm, threats and enemies come to mind.
And David isn’t trying to avoid the unpleasantness of what his enemies are doing – I imagine that as long as he is thinking about them, he’s going to go all-in with the details; They intentionally come together to take their common target down, and they wouldn’t mind twisting the truth to achieve their goal; In fact, look at that – they delight in lies, and I could picture how they find it a thrill and a good thing in their eyes to speak blessing from their mouth, when they’re really cursing folks from the heart.
David’s word for these folks is that they ‘shall be slain… Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.‘ To me this emphasizes that their actions bring them to a condition that doesn’t necessarily require much outside force for them to be torn down. Leaning walls have weak foundations – I mean, I’m no engineer, but I could imagine that they are heavier where it doesn’t matter, and lighter where it’s needed.
We’re brought to meditate (selah) on these words – and don’t be surprised if the revelation that surfaces sounds something like this: God is our Father who is our Rock and Firm Foundation, while everything else that revels in anything apart from the Truth is unstable and unreliable.
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.
Selah
God is trustworthy, God is reliable. We stand upon Him alone, we shall not be moved, we shall trust in Him – for He not only secures us, but He ensures our stability.
Dear reader, I suppose this is for me that much today, but I believe we can all be encouraged by the Truth of our God being our Salvation, our Glory, our Defense; We not only stand but find our strength to move from God, who is our Rock.
And take a look at that 8th verse, and imagine it this way: Trust in the Rock at all times. Pour our your heart before the Rock. Sound familiar? When the Israelites were complaining (again) in the wilderness, crying out for water to drink, Moses consulted with God, and He instructed Moses to speak to the Rock.
There’s already enough value from when we pour out our heart before Him, and speaking to the Rock. That’s why I write. I let it all out. When we see it from the perspective of the events between Moses and the rock, had he obeyed, water would have flowed out.
With this in mind, is it also for us to say that just as we stand on the Rock and be strong, so we speak to the Rock and we receive living water? Can this be a supplement to when Christ says that when we believe, the water flows out from us, even as rivers of living water?
Is it all to say that the same Father who provides us with stability also bursts forth water from the outside in, as Christ guarantees water flows from our bellies, from the inside out?
It’s a thought to play with, but, well, the running thought here so far is that we find stability in Christ, essential in this unreliable world full of uncertainties.
And David writes more about this world and men who have yet to come to believing in Christ:
9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor.
10 Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.
11 God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God.
12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.
The ways of this world are without honor, ultimately unreliable. The things of this world are not worthy of our hearts. And, see, we apparently have a sure weight, we are anchored down with Christ, because the rest of the world, with all they place their trust in, and all they set their heart on – they are ultimately as vapors, easily blown to and fro.
That’s who we were before Christ – unstable, even volatile.
But praise be to God, because, indeed, true mercy comes from Him; His mercies are new every morning.
And more for me today, let us praise God, because true power belongs to Him – that is, peace that goes beyond all understanding, unto power and stability and strength that comes only from His throne.
Be still, and know that God is who He says He is.
Wait on the Lord, and renew your strength.
In His presence is peace beyond understanding, and joy unspeakable.
Amen. Folks, let’s keep on reflecting, let’s keep receiving revelations from our Father, especially during these times. Our God is a Firm Foundation, and a reliable Source of power and strength. He IS our Strength.
Be still, know that He is God.
