Noah’s Ark

A Picture of Jesus Christ in Genesis 6-8

CG Module 2026 – Lesson 4

11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.Genesis 6:11-12

5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the LORD said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.Genesis 6:5-8

(How was the flood going to destroy the birds of the air?)

The Ark was created to save Noah, as the rest of the world was corrupt, and the wickedness of man was great.

7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. Hebrews 11:7

4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;2 Peter 2:4-5

NOAH’S ARK: A PICTURE OF JESUS CHRIST

Acts 4:12 NKJV

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

John 14:6 NKJV

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD; He became an heir of righteousness, and preached righteousness (it was so even before the Ark was made). Emphasis: Because Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD, he became an heir of righteousness, and preached righteousness. It ALWAYS starts with Christ, ALWAYS starts with grace. The obedience and the preaching precede the favor and the inheritance.

who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ1 Peter 3:20-21

13 And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch. 15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. Genesis 6:13-15

2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,

And as a root out of dry ground.

He has no form or comeliness;

And when we see Him,

There is no beauty that we should desire Him.Isaiah 53:2

Gopherwood represents the body of Christ, and pitch represents atonement and protection, the blood of Christ.

25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,Romans 3:25

3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.Colossians 3:3

As the Ark protected everyone in it from the flood, so Christ protects us from judgment.

17 And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. Genesis 6:17-18

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”Hebrews 8:10-12

22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.Genesis 6:22

Noah found grace in God’s eyes. This grace was no mere gesture of favor, but one that goes as binding as a covenant.

God’s goodness leads us to repentance. God’s grace leads us to obedience.

1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.Genesis 7:1

4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.Genesis 8:4

As Christ rested His head on the cross after saying ‘it is finished‘, so the Ark rested on Ararat – which means ‘The curse is reversed

Insights during discussion:

We are IN Christ, as Noah was IN the Ark.

We were ‘pre-loved’ by God. Moses wrote that Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD, and generations later, in the New Testament, did Peter and the writer to the Hebrews indicate His righteousness. This was all before the Ark was made, all before the blood.

We’re IN Christ no matter what we do, and no matter how much we stumble. We’re in the wooden Ark, sealed with pitch.

The specifics of the Ark are indicatory of the very specific love God has for each and every one of us.

The Lord is our Refuge. The Lord is our Ark.

Salvation and belief is our coming into the Ark. We found grace in the Lord. He proclaimed us righteous. Our believing is coming into the Ark.

God closed the door of the Ark. He was the One who sealed us in. Our abiding in Him is permanent. Our dwelling in His secret place is absolute.

The winds and waves obey Him. The flood obeyed Him.

The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin (outside the Ark), righteousness (You’re in the Ark), and judgment (the flood destroys all outside).

All in all, we’re thankful for the wisdom poured out upon us. We’re thankful for the mind of Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit – that through all that’s happening in real-time, we are reminded of perspectives of our salvation and our safety in various parts of the Bible – in the Old and New Testament.

It’s true – Christ IS our Refuge and our Fortress, but He is also our Ark. We have been sealed IN Him, much so that (1) it’s not up to us to stay inside because God sealed us in and (2) no matter how we fare in our own existence, it doesn’t change the truth that we’re ALWAYS in the Ark, ALWAYS in the presence of Christ.

And so I look at everything that’s going on, in and around the world, in and around my life – and I give thanks, knowing that I am safe and secure, always at peace; All because of the grace of God, the finished work of Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

All for the unity of the Body of Christ, the expansion of His Kingdom, and the utmost glory of His name.

Amen.
