I definitely went through this Psalm on the 12th day of the month before.
Is it redundant? Probably, if the same exact thing happens on every 12th day of the month… But times are different. Seasons are different. Mindsets and priorities change.
Everything else is variable, but the Word of the Lord is constant… Just as the One who inspires them is absolute, consistent, faithful and true.
Praise and glory to the Father, for the reading of the Word. Amen.
Psalm 12
Man’s Treachery and God’s Constancy
To the Chief Musician. On an eight-stringed harp. A Psalm of David.
Not really sure how David sung this composition, much less match it with music from an ‘eight-stringed harp‘. Fascinating to imagine how he produced all this, during his time.
1 Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases! For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
2 They speak idly everyone with his neighbor; With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, And the tongue that speaks proud things,
4 Who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own; Who is lord over us?”
No introductions, he goes straight to the point – Lifting his concerns to the Lord. Maybe we really should be coming up with our own Psalms – not necessarily for leading the congregation, but personal… oh, let me say it: Personal petitions, personal complaints and grievances to our Father.
But David’s words here aren’t too far from the landscape we’re seeing here and now – Indeed, the Godly man ceases. The faithful disappear. Again, as Daniel predicted and prophesied, knowledge increases, but the hearts of men fail them.
The threat of ceasing and disappearing is very real – not because we willingly quit, but quite possibly because we are overwhelmed by the information overload, but also probably because we’re silenced – because we’re being smothered by the sheer amount of data that piles on the brain…
…or, as David continues, we’re silenced because of a world intentional in silencing us, or having its way with its own words, flattering, speaking proud things.
5 “For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, Now I will arise,” says the LORD; “I will set him in the safety for which he yearns.”
6 The words of the LORD are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times
7 You shall keep them, O LORD, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.
8 The wicked prowl on every side, When vileness is exalted among the sons of men.
But, indeed, we give praise to the Father, because through the generations, He responds, and He rises for the oppressed and the needy. He is their Advocate, their Protection.
We may not necessarily be poor in our eyes, but the point is that He sets us in the safety we long for – primarily, by His words.
Now that’s something right there – He protects us, He brings us to safety by His Words. He comes against the proud and flattering words of the world by way of His own pure Word.
Our Father comes against the proud heart, by the same Word that spoke Creation forth.
And, really, I’m brought to remember:
The same Word that spoke peace to the winds and waves speaks peace beyond understanding, into our entire beings, much so that we are able to rest, and even sleep while the rest of the world spins in chaos.
The same Word that spoke light over the formless waters, speaks Light over our own lives, that we see the path ahead of us, and are not lost in the dark.
The same Word that spoke: ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased‘ – speaks to the world around us, of the favor we have in Christ; Much so, that we are bold to call the one true God our Father, and He calls us His children.
The pure words of our Father, purified seven times, proclaims, through Christ, that we are protected, we are guided, and we are favored.
Thank You, Father. Thank You for this reminder at this time.
God bless us all.
