Leading With Honor
Takeaways from Dr. Sohl De Guia, first Morning Session:
“The illiterate of the future are not those who can’t read or write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
– Alvin Toffler
West Point describes what’s called the VUCA Environment – Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. This world is certainly becoming more and more VUCA.
And in such an environment, adjustments and changes have to be made, known comprehensively as the Grinding Process to some folks. In this Grinding Process, tension will arise, transitions will come.
In the same environment, one thing remains the same: There are still things we can acquire or influence. We are leaders, whether we like it or not. There are things that we’re doing only because everyone is doing it – we have the unique opportunity to lead with honor.
When it comes to leading in this environment, honor, respect, and accountability are what is needed.
And honor, respect, and accountability are things we do, and not things we merely say.
Leading with Honor entails the following more specific points:
Intuitive Clarity – Clarity is the leader’s best friend. Leaders take people from here to here. Now, if there is confusion with the leader, there will be doubt among the followers. Seeing does not guarantee understanding. Showing does not mean teaching.
The enemy of the excellent is the good – and while we seek and desire excellence in what we do, we ought to prioritize excellence in our own clarity, while we’re at it.
Values – A Person’s principles or standards of behavior; One’s Judgment of what is important in Life.
Right Mindset – Only those with clear Values and Purpose can sort out their priorities objectively. We need a reference point, a standard and basis. The right mindset directs us to excellence, not only in what we do but who we become.
Intentional Collaboration – One’s ability to see affects His ability to create. You can’t create something you can’t see.
‘When there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do you no harm.’ – African Proverb
In collaboration, one would do well to consider an environment that encourages Learner’s, Contributor’s, Challenger’s safety: That is, an atmosphere where learning, contributing, and constructive challenging are not only welcomed but encouraged. After all, every good idea deserves to be challenged.
In conclusion, we honor those who follow us by leading them with honor – and we need to lead ourselves with honor before we are able to lead others as such. This involves more than just deeds, but integrity… and there is no integrity where there is no clarity.
As such, we have greater reason to seek our Creator, for clarity of mind – the first and best step to take in this very VUCA world.

Siged: It’s only good for me if it’s good for you, the family, the community and the environment.
Purpose and Vision and Destiny is both singular and not singular at the same time.
That’s connected to clarity – the dream or vision given to you has something to do with not only benefiting you but your community. What is good for you and good for others? If that’s what we have it mind we realized that it’s not just about looking for target markets, it’s more looking for communities to assist and to help.
The Tragedy of the Commons
– Where shared resources become overused and depleted because individuals act in their own self-interest rather than the common good.
Again, as leaders, we bring people from one place to another. And with that in mind, we want to move them from self-interest to the common, collective good. We want to move them from informing them, to consulting with them, then involving them, then collaborating with them, and finally empowering them.
From another perspective, we move them – from instrumentalization, to instruction, to information, to consultation, to inclusion, to shared decision-making… then, to partial to full delegation of decision-making authority, and finally, to community-owned initiatives.
We’d want folks to get to the higher levels, obviously. I think it ties in with the Siged principle.
Ultimately, yeah. We push for clarity, because this is good for others, good for our family, good for our community, good for our environment – and therefore, it is good for us. We bring people from confusion into clarity. For ourselves, and for others.
That’s what I take from this – That in this uncertain world full of regret, full of fear and anxiety… We’re reminded here, of clarity and its importance.
I’m personally reminded, rather, validated, because we’ve been pushing for flowing, thanking God and trusting God.
I mean, life since turning 40 has been difficult, like things have escalated – but it’s really more of my personal transition from a really long trial version, into actual application.
In flowing, we discover what moves along, and what hinders movement. In thanking God, we find more reasons to trust Him, and in trusting Him, we find more reasons to thank Him. In so doing, we practice clarity within, which promoting clarity for other people, that we lead ourselves, and lead others with honor.
10 If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.
11 Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.
12 If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?
