Let’s continue with our walk through Psalm 119.

Psalm 119:105-112
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules.
107 I am severely afflicted; give me life, O LORD, according to your word!
108 Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O LORD, and teach me your rules.
109 I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts.
111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.
112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end.
Today I am reminded of that one worship song I first heard during high school, whose lyrics for the chorus were literally verse 105.
I couldn’t remember the verse so I googled it – Apparently, it was the great Michael W. Smith who composed and sang it:
When I feel afraid, think I’ve lost my way
Still, you’re there right beside me
And nothing will I fear, as long as You are near
Please be with me to the end
And it looks like there’s a second verse to the song that I’m not aware of:
I will not forget, Your love for me and yet
my heart forever is wandering
Jesus be my Guide and hold me to Your side
I will love You to the end
Jesus is the Living Word – Our Guide, the Lamp to our feet, and the Light unto our path. As the song goes, He is beside us, He is near us, and He is with us. He loves us, and He holds us to His side.
To know that the omnipresent God and Creator of all things is with us, and here, to realize He is BESIDE us – that’s what we should probably be appreciating at this point.
Of course, for us to know that He goes before us, behind us, and so forth – these are important too, but what it means for God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) to be BESIDE us… well, off the top of my head, this tells me that He is willing to see things the way we see them, just as He acknowledges what we think is important. His being beside us tells me of His great humility – The God who created all things, and knows all there is to know about the continued existence of the greatest stars in the heavens, down to the smallest of atoms – He chooses not only to be WITH us, but to be BESIDE us – understanding what we value according to our limited senses and our limited minds.
Before we even thought about swearing any sort of oath to our God, our Father already moved, by way of His Son, Jesus Christ – not only to reconcile us (bringing into a covenant greater than a contract), but to KEEP us. The Psalmist says he keeps His righteous rules, but we realize that through Christ, the living Word or the living Rule, we have been made righteous – and He keeps us.
We are kept, even in our affliction. We have peace, knowing that in our affliction, the Scripture assures us that we will be given life. However, we also have joy, knowing that in our affliction, Christ, the living Word has given us Life beyond life, superior to affliction – and let us not be surprised that, again, even in our affliction, we give praise – freewill offerings of praise of our God, for the Word, and Christ, the fulfillment of the Word!
Christ is the Living Word who is our Prince of Peace, and the Source of our Joy. He is the Word not merely kept in our memory, but written on our hearts; He is the Word which we are brought to stay focused on, regardless of what snares and traps are set before us.
The Living Word is truly our Guide, and it is only by His grace that we are inclined to express praise, to say, and to sing: I will love You to the end.
May we continue to flow in His word, giving thanks to our almighty Father for not only giving us the Scripture from which we ought to grow… But also for giving us Christ, fulfillment of all Scripture, the living Word that provides the growth.
Let’s continue to give Him thanks and praise, because not a day goes by in this world and in this reality where we are reminded of His Word, and are therefore reminded of Christ, from the major issues down to the small complications.
By His word, we are assured of His faithfulness. Through Christ’s faithfulness, we are naturally brought back to feeding on the Word.
Thank You, Lord.
Keeping this a little shorter for now. Until the next post, may the Lord continue to overflow us all with His blessings and revelations.
